Typically, adults who have their upper and lower jaws in the wrong positions need corrective jaw surgery and/or orthodontic treatment. The reason jaws can be misaligned can be genetic, the result of an injury, linked to a birth defect, or due to environmental factors.
As an adult, the jaw bones are no longer growing, and the only way to correct it is through jaw surgery also called Orthognathic Surgery. It occurs when the misalignment of the bite is caused by the structure of the jaw itself rather than the arrangement of teeth.
This is an important surgery to consider, especially if you notice you’re having trouble swallowing, breathing, or chewing, or if you continually grind your teeth. Having surgical orthodontics can be life-changing, giving patients a completely new smile and allowing them to properly eat, sleep, and swallow again.
Orthodontic treatment in conjunction with orthognathic surgery is usually determined after both an orthodontist and a Maxillofacial surgeon evaluate the patient. The evaluation usually includes getting X-rays (and possibly CT scans) and developing virtual models of the teeth and jaws.
Then, if the orthodontist and surgeon agree to move forward, orthodontic treatment is often needed to help align the upper and lower teeth with preparing for the procedure. Once that is done, the actual surgery is performed under general anesthesia in a hospital or operating suite.
After surgery has been complete, and there has been time to recover, the patient will continue in orthodontic treatment for minor adjustments. From the first evaluation to removing the last phase of braces, the process can take anywhere from one to three years.
Though this may seem like a long and hefty process, it is an important step to take to help improve your overall health and give you the beautiful smile that you deserve. With the right team and advanced technology, our team at Smiles Orthodontics will make this process as smooth as possible.
